November is Aviation History Month and is dedicated to exploring, recognizing and celebrating America’s great contributions and achievements in the development of aviation.

Celebrating Our Veterans

The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce & Industry would like to thank all military personnel who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Saturday, November 11

7 – 2 pm. Free Coffee for all our veterans and those serving our country. Milk & Honey, 1101 7th Street, Harlan.

9 – 12 pm. Special Gift. All Vets are invited to Farm Sweet Farm 1222 Ironwood Drive, Harlan, for a special gift from Rosmann Family Farms as their way of saying, “Thank you for your service!”

11 – 2 pm. Veterans Day Soup Lunch. Veterans eat free. Everyone is welcome. Shelby Community Building, 500 East Street, Shelby. Soup, salad, dessert, and drinks. Adults $10, kids ages (5 – 10) $5, children under 5 free. Sponsored by Shelby American Legion and Auxiliary.

Sunday, November 12

7 – 12 pm. Honoring Our Veterans Breakfast. Everyone is invited to come out and honor our veterans. Veterans Memorial Building, 1104 Morningview Drive, Harlan. Free-will donation breakfast. Serving: scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, toast, bacon, milk, orange juice, and coffee.

Monday, November 13

10 – 11 am. Harlan Community Schools Veterans Day Program. All veterans and their families are invited to attend the Veterans Program.  "Recognize, Respect, Remember". Harlan Community High School Gym, 2102 Durant Street, Harlan.

Ambassador Visit, Thursday, November 30, 5 pm, Mi Casa Family Mexican Restaurant, 512 Market Street, Harlan. Come join the celebration of their new menu and welcome them to the Chamber of Commerce.

Elk Horn Wins Tourism Award – The World Aebleskiver Major League Eating Contest in Elk Horn was the recipient of a tourism award during the Iowa Tourism Conference held recently. Accepting the award was Lisa Riggs, manager, Danish Windmill. This event tied for Outstanding New Event with Rhubarb on the River, Manchester, in the rural category. 

Something to Know

Harlan, the Christmas City: Volunteers are needed this weekend, Saturday, November 11 and Sunday, November 12 to set up light displays in Pioneer Park and Saturday, November 18 and Sunday, November 19 at the Harlan Courthouse Square. If you would like to contribute to the “Christmas City”, the committee is looking for donations and inviting Harlan residents and businesses to register for this year’s 2017 Lighting Challenge. Donation and Challenge entry forms can be mailed to: Harlan, the Christmas City, PO Box 4, Harlan, IA 51537 or donate online. Donations are tax deductible and all funds raised go towards purchasing lights for Pioneer Park, Downtown Harlan, and other sites around town.

Myrtue Medical Center Auxiliary Tree of Lights Ornaments. Deadline for ordering angel ornaments for the 2017 MMCA Tree of Lights has been set for Thursday, November 30. Persons wishing to order ornaments can do so by obtaining forms at the information desk or at the gift shop at MMC in Harlan. Forms can be left at the information desk or gift shop or can be sent to Deb McCarthy, 30516 430th Street, Avoca, IA 51521.

Harlan Winter Volleyball Leagues Now Forming. Co-ed Thursday night volleyball, recreation league. Games start Thursday, November 30. Register by Wednesday, November 22. Fee is $100/team. Games start at 6 pm and will be played at Veterans Auditorium. Registration forms available at Veterans Auditorium or Harlan City Hall. For more information, call 712-755-3440.

Shelby County Area Events

Saturday, November 11 – Veterans Day.
“Stomp Out Suicide” 5K, starting time 10 am. Parking and on-site registration will be at the Corn Crib, 12 East Street, Shelby. Registration fee $20 and $50 for families. Fee includes Stomp Out Suicide T-shirt. Register online: shelbyia.com. Check-in will begin at 8:30 am at the Corn Crib. Sponsored by Shelby Youth Council. 

Tuesday, November 14

American Red Cross Blood Drive, 7:30 am - 1:30 pm, Harlan Community High School, 2012 Durant Street, Harlan.

Iowa Works - Onsite Job Support - Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street. A representative from the Council Bluffs Iowa Works office will be onsite to help the public with job applications, resume building, writing cover letters and etc.

Iowa Community Kitchen serves their meal 4 pm to 6:30 pm at First Baptist Church, Harlan. Everyone is welcome to attend. Tuesday’s meal: Mediterranean dish, salad, and dessert.

Wednesday, November 15

Kernels of History: Shelby County and Hybrid Seed Corn Production Exhibit 6 pm at the Prairie Trails Exhibit Hall, Shelby County Historical Museum, 1805 Morse Avenue, Harlan. Doors will open and refreshments will be served at 5:00pm.

Thursday, November 16

MMHA Gift Shop Holiday Open House, 9 – 4 pm and Friday, November 17, 9 – 1 pm, Myrtue Medical Center Auble Conference Room, 1213 Garfield Avenue, Harlan. Glitter & Glitz and Seasonal Gifts. Proceeds of the Gift Shop fund programs of Myrtue Medical Center.

Museum of Danish America Brown Bag Lunch Program - Iowa in WWI. In this centennial year of America’s entrance into WWI, Leo Landis, curator for the State Historical Museum, looks at the experience of Iowans during the war. Noon - 1 pm in the Bro Dining Room, Museum of Danish America, 2212 Washington Street, Elk Horn. Free to the general public. Bring a lunch to enjoy while you listen.

Friday, November 17

Thanksgiving Open House, 9 – 3 pm, at all Shelby County State Bank locations. This is for all Shelby County State Bank customers. Come enjoy refreshments and register to win a turkey. Come see the canned food trees on display at all SCSB’s. They will be donated to the local food pantries.

Saturday, November 18

American Red Cross Blood Drive, 7:30 am - 12:30 pm, Shelby Community Building, 500 East Street, Shelby. Walk-ins welcome.

Holiday Harvest Market, 9 am - 1 pm, FarmTable Procurement & Delivery, 1901 Hawkeye Avenue, Harlan.

Shelby County Catholic School Harvest Dinner, St. Boniface Parish Center in Westphalia. Cash Bar 5-9 pm, Staley’s Chicken Dinner 6-7:30 pm, Auction starting at 7:30. Many great auction items. $50 raffle tickets to win a $10,000 cash prize.

Sunday, November 19

Earling Volunteer Firemen 50th Annual Firemen’s Supper. Serving 4:30 – 8 pm, St. Joseph Parish Hall, Earling. Serving broasted chicken with all the trimmings. Adults $10, children under 12 $7. Drawing for 2017 Model 420 Honda Rancher 4x4 and for a 43” LED TV.

Save the Date

Opening Friday November 25. New Exhibit: “Home-Grown Art”, hosted by the Museum of Danish America, 2212 Washington Street, Elk Horn. A selection of art from the museum’s collection, all created in the tri-county area of Shelby, Cass, and Audubon counties. Make plans to see it before June 10, 2018.

Sunday, December 3. SCCO Pancake Brunch, 9:30 – 1 pm, Harlan Community High School, 2102 Durant Street, Harlan. Please plan to attend this delicious brunch featuring The Pancake Man. Serving pancakes, sausage and bacon, orange juice, and coffee. Adults $7, children 10 and under $5. Hosted by Shelby County Community Outreach.
