Our Story:

Several civic groups petitioned for a special election in 1944 to purchase property and construct a municipal airport.  On June 19, 1944,

the City of Harlan purchased approximately 100 acres from C.N. and Mary Christensen and Harlan Municipal Airport was started.

Hangar 5, was the first hangar added to the field.  This hangar also housed the office of Alvin and Lawrence Rushenberg in the east end.

On Father's Day in 1945, the first Flight Breakfast in the country was held at the airport.  Hangar 2 was added in 1946.

Today, our airport includes 9 hangars and a separate office building.  28 Planes are stored here, including 2 crop dusting planes, one twin engine

and 25 single engine general aviation airplanes.  Renters from 7 surrounding counties take residence here, as well as 17  residents from

Shelby County.  Two runways grace our grounds, including a 4100 foot paved runway with instrument approaches and a 1700 foot grass runway.

The Annual Flight Breakfast is still held on Father's Day, serving over 400 breakfasts with 15 or more fly ins on that day.  The airport serves as

a stop for fueling, weather issues, visiting family and friends, business services and parts, medical transport, training and pleasure.
